"Eyes On The Backcast"

Castaway Lodge Seadrift Report
By Capt. Kris Kelley

We finished up the 2013/14 Texas Duck Season at sundown on Sunday the 26th. We had the pleasure of welcoming guests from all over the State to help us send it out to the sound of stripping drags and the smell of smokeless powder. While we always emphasize safety, I was particularly focused on reinvigorating safety protocols and getting everyone on their toes through the final push. With special thanks to our excellent team of guides; the staff here at the lodge keeping us running; all the way down to the crew of young gun helpers afield, we made it through safely and as strong as we started.

On The Fishing Scene

As the guns head for the closet until next year, it's that time to dust off the level-wind and oil up some bearings. Fishing exploded post cold front as a rapid between front weather rebound lead our guests to decent wingshooting and explosive flats fishing for Redfish and Black Drum. Capt. Chris Cady led the charge pre-fishing while guests were duck hunting. The pre-fishing measured the move for a return visit as guests transitioned from the morning hunt into afternoon fishing. Returning to the lodge, capt. Chris had a sheepish "big smile" on his face as the pattern proved to be in full swing. Over the next two days the fishing accelerated on the catching side with Redfish centered in the mid-to oversize slot were on a feeding frenzy.

Delicate baits such as fresh dead shrimp proved lethal with hard to come by cut mullet absolutely smoking them. Chris pre-fished it with soft plastics and managed limits as well. There will be a lot of swings in the bell curve heading toward Spring. Wade fisherman have a lot of mud to look at between now and then for solid Trout and I'm sure we'll be seeing a strong mixture of Redfish and Black Drum heading for the mud pockets looking to spawn as well.

Mexico Duck Hunting

Capt. Matt Raley and I will be heading for Mexico on Thursday to revisit our logistics and look to put shooters on the ground for the 2014/15 Waterfowl Season. If interested, contact us for pricing and scheduling.
