Deep Thinking Shallow Mindedness

Castaway Lodge Seadrift Report
By Capt. Kris Kelley

Tournament

We are working deep in August. When a 28", 8.25Lb. Redfish gets beat out by a 28", 9.27Lb. Redfish, you know there are some "solids" being caught. The Oilman Helping Hands Tournament didn't see big numbers but some big size coming over the boards. My team looked like they were in the thick of it with over half limits of Trout to 23" and a solid Redfish entry at 26 5/8's. Yea, that fish got smoked off the leader board. Capt. James Cunningham found his late in the morning after big struggles early and a slick calm bay. He had two Redfish on the 28" mark and ended up taking second, bummer.

Trout

Trout fishing is looking up with nice numbers coming to hand of late for boat fishermen working deep shell tapers. There is a big shut down in the bite shortly after sunrise and finding a finishing hole can be a challenge. We managed to get over the top today with Rick and Dawn R. from Austin. Smaller fish moved off the structure leaving a slower bite on bigger Trout. After the initial bite shutdown, it was another big hunt. We finally caught up with them over shell in 5' of water.

Wind & Weather

There is no more brutal assault and insult to injury than to come off of smoking 20 knot winds and garhole water in August to slick off days with rapidly swapping wind directions. That's a punch in the snout in my opinion. Boat fishing relies on wind direction and water conditions. Flipping your approach on it's ear 45 to 180 degrees is mentally challenging at a time when you may have very little mental left. Slipping in and firing off a bite on a one-eight-zero wind just to have it go zero-three-zero in the middle of the smoke-pole is knee buckling. Getting pushed off of hard fought for fish will make you spit but it happens alot around "weather".

Slick offs send the sweat piling up in the arches of your boat shoes and make the fish scatter and lounge while looking for a waiter with an umbrella drink. Temperatures climb and the only saviour is the throttle which we call "turning on the a/c". That's August fishing on a slick off. Guess what, we're knocking on September and the fresh breath of inbound cool fronts! We're ready, until then we'll keep on them. Come see us when you get a chance.
