Button Up to Bow Up

Castaway Lodge Seadrift Report
By Capt. Kris Kelley

Redfish action with minor showings of Pony sized Black Drum continues strong and should build as we head into March along with Trout concentrations moving over shell and shell/mud and mud/grass venues. Misty haze, fog, and wind have come back into play of late. Buttoning up with layers for the various weather scenarios is a good idea. More often than not big winds and tough weather find the fish on a strong feed "in the weather". As weather stabilizes after a front, they'll typically get a little sluggish. A belly full of food and warming temperatures can put them in the hammock laid up in a mud pocket. Those days are the challenge and dominant clear water and glassy conditions will frustrate the best attempts.

Capt. Chris reported fast action on Redfish with guests over the weekend. Working mud/grass pockets led guests to full limits of Redfish along with a few Black Drum for the effort. On the wade fishing scene, Capt. James E. reported a lot of smaller Trout hanging over area shell reefs. Larger fish are still hanging over mud/grass in the lakes and shallower bays. Guts and troughs and lake drains have been a go to on water fallouts but this isn't as predictable given milder temperatures.
We're looking for Trout action to pick up heading toward March as Shrimp migrations begin to make the trek into the bays. Schooling action on Redfish and tightening herds of Black Drum will make some memories for sure. Come see us when you get a chance!
