Riding the Tide of Warmer Weather

Castaway Lodge Seadrift Report

As predicted fishing here in February is sharply ahead of schedule in terms of seasonality and there are more than a few signs backing that up.  Finfish are already present which is a late April signature along with undersized Redfish in places where they shouldn't appear until mid-April.  We're also seeing Stingray's already and that's a mid-March signature.  Trying to establish where the fishing calendar is in terms of our seasonal calendar is something we have to wrangle with at times to consider approach and emphasis.

The fish are presently located on soft bottoms over mud/grass which is a classic early Spring pattern.  Exactly how long they'll hold there remains to be seen.  We've been lighting them up while wade fishing and drift fishing using a variety of soft plastics and targeting off color water.  Airboat Redfishing trips have been off the chart with schools of Redfish hitting the flats on higher water and pooling up in the fallouts during low water periods.

Hurricane Alley

While we managed a little light shower this morning, it's the first sign of rain in better than a month and we've been wind whipped with blistering winds, temps and velocities.  We've been getting coastal advisories regarding fire warnings so no doubt we've dried up a bunch.  The weather is so unseasonal, untimely, and strange that it has made me consider the likelyhood of a high probability of Hurricane potential along the Gulf Coast this year.  That's something we're going to have to keep an eye on and it sure doesn't look like there are any potential cooling catalysts on the horizon.  If we reverse course back to a drought cycle, we can look for plenty of challenges ahead but I'm doubtful we'll hypersalinate again with lake levels poised to put any heavy rains over the spillway.

Lodge News - Construction Update

We're getting to the fun stuff as we put our signature on the landmark facilities here in Seadrift.  Hill Country Flagstone will be a signature of the Bayou facility and Superior Stone just dropped off some gorgeous material.
