Smuggler's Cay, The Legend At The Lodge
The Lodge was pleased to welcome one of the Nation’s top fish and wildlife artists, Steve Whitlock from Sarasota, FL over the weekend. You might have seen his work gracing CCA banquets, Bass Pro Shops, Bertram & Hell’s Bay dealer prints, etc. The Lodge was the backdrop for some research on Texas landscapes and some awesome Teal hunting and fishing. You can see his work at www.stevewhitlock.com To me, the background of the artist has a lot to do with my attraction to their work. I don’t think there are too many artists with as much background color as Steve, his waterborn stories from the Florida back country were mesmerizing. From perilously bad decisions, heartache, separation, rehabilitation, forgiveness, the love of a good woman, and the right encouragement in the right places at the right time would glue anyone to a 3 hour movie of his life. I can tell you “he doesn’t paint it, if he hasn’t seen it”. This guy is the real deal and we were honored to have him with us.
The Lodge also welcomed Walt “Troutmaster” S. and son Trey and guest David T. from Brenham; Chad W; Jessica; and Brian W. for Alligator hunts, fishing, and hog hunting. We had plenty of weather bouncing around and that kept us on our toes fishing and in constant contact with our “cell-dar”. Making the right call on a departure in and around weather can be the difference between success and pure misery. We managed to hit it right everyday as the skies opened up.
Teal
The opener was a little nerve racking due to heavy weather until the first flights hit the blocks. Limits came around 7:30am. Sunday proved even better as the weather settled out a bit after break light and we got a lot of birds back as area fields drained out. Pictures on the hunting board.
Alligator
We are thinning them out from 8 to 12’ at this time. So far, everyone has gotten the trophy they are after. With clients ranging from Iowa to Ft. Worth, we managed to make some memories of a lifetime in the last few days. Photos on the hunting board.
