Second Chance To Set The Hook

Castaway Lodge Seadrift Report
By Capt. Kris Kelley

We just wrapped up our two day Miracle Farm (https://www.facebook.com/miraclefarm) event supporting young men in the Brenham, Texas area that have had a tough go of it. I learned a lot about the organization during the event; the boys definitely taught me a thing or two. These were some fine young men being educated in the traditions of this great State. A few things I learned were upon entry to the farm, each boy is given a horse and must take care of it and nurture it. All that while learning "old school" things like saddling, grooming, blacksmithing, roping, welding, etc. in a faith based environment. This is a working farm. The facility has an accredited school in which the boys can graduate with a "full high school diploma".

I got to know the Horse Trainer and chaperon Mr. Mike G. This 62 year old salt of the earth Texan has undoubtedly had a great influence on many lives. While circumstances brought the boys to the Miracle Farm, I am certain that it was luck more than misfortune.

On the fishing side, we faced big challenges on the water regarding conditions but managed to meet them head on. Redfish were the star of the show working bait over shorelines and mud/shell. I made it a goal to make every fish "a win" for the boys and we kept all the Gafftop, and even a Whiting. I did draw the line at Hardheads, a fishing guide does have to have boundaries.

While this was a charity event sponsored by the lodge, in retrospect I feel as if we were the ones receiving the gift. Giving is a part of success and I hope all of our guests take some pride in being a part of what made this happen.

Truly,

Capt. Kris Kelley
