Fishing Shines as Ducks Get a Break

Castaway Lodge Seadrift Report
By Capt. Kris Kelley

Sponsored by: Mercury Marine; Air Ranger Airboats; Haynie Bay Boats; Baysport Marine Victoria; Castaway Rods; JL Marine; Pure Fishing; and, Bob's Machine Shop.

We hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving as we welcome the duck split and the end of the first season. We had a big time here at the lodge with guests from all over the US and as far away as New Zealand.

Fishing Scene

Solid action over mud and grass made for some nice rod bending as Redfish and Black Drum put smiles on lots of faces. No cake walk with slick offs and lots of clear water making for some challenging approaches. Capt. Chris and Capt. James ran into some ups and downs with the bite over the past few days but all in all fish were found in every location.
Capt. Chris reported a solid bite on topwater with Redfish eager to slam the surface baits over mud and grass pockets. With water falling a bit and stabilizing, we've been seeing fish piled up in our decoys on recent duck hunts and turning the water to mud boiling and kicking through the blocks.

Duck Hunting

Hard weather most of the month led to some blistering shooting but over the last week into Thanksgiving afternoons proved best on winds puffing into dark. Slick offs early hampered a few hunts with little pressure to be found over the holiday as well. Redheads and Pintails in the afternoon with a few wigeon saved the day. Puddlers early were balled up and just not moving much for us.

Goose Hunting

We've got openings starting the 8th into the 12th if anybody wants to make the run down.

Lodge News

We've got a smattering of weekend dates with limited availability in January if anyone is interested. We look forward to hunting with eveyone as we await the second season opener on 12/13. Come see us when you get a chance!
