Coastal Texas Duck Report

Big storms Wednesday evening with 3" of rain in an hour were immediately followed by slack winds and fog pre-front. This yielded surprising results on our hunts yesterday with 7 different species taken including Gadwall, Wigeon, Teal, Bluebill, Pintail, Redheads, and Shoveler. This yielded full limits for our guests from Pennsylvania while other guests arriving mid-day managed to take limits of Redheads on an afternoon shoot. We're just so excited to see so many returning faces from all over the Nation. With many waterfowlers struggling all over the Nation with lack luster weather and poor bird movement, it reminds me of something I've said many times. When it's bad all over, it's always going to be better here on the mid-Texas Gulf Coast than anywhere! That's playing out again, over and over as Mother Nature can't seem to figure out whether to kick Winter into gear or not.

Fishing Scene

We haven't done a great deal of fishing but what we have seen has thus far on afternoon trips following morning duck hunts has been a little sparse. Capt. Donnie Heath reported few fish shallow but nothing deep either. That's a problem. Changing venues the next day led to immediate success after guests said a prayer aboard before the first lines hit the water. Ha, that yielded an immediate hook-up on all rods with Redfish and Blue Catfish coming to hand. That was the high point as smaller fish below the slot began to dominate the action.

Capt. Kolten Braun lit up the Redfish scouting yesterday ahead of a duck/fish combination trip this afternoon. We'll see how that plays out with guests. God doesn't seem to have a problem with us catching fish or killing his marvelous creations at will, he just sometimes has a problem with us doing it with clients...LOL! Stay tuned. One thing is for sure, the fish will struggle with fast transitions from cold to what I would consider "unseasonably" warm. This is a dangerous game for them to play. If they move shallow and get hung up on a sharp cold snap (if there is such a thing in the cards) it can result in disaster. I've seen the grey/orange brick road that stretches on for miles and it's not a pretty sight. Fish trapped shallow by rapidly falling tides and lingering cold won't survive. Let's hope we can dodge that bullet.
